You may wonder — why celebrate something that, at first glance, seems messy, absurd, or even a little gross?
The Exploding Whale has become much more than an infamous news clip; it’s part of Florence’s unique identity and spirit.

Over the past 55 years, this peculiar moment in Oregon history has grown into something far greater — a cultural legend known around the world. What started as a blunder on the beach has evolved into a celebration of creativity, curiosity, and community.

We celebrate because the story reminds us that mistakes can become lessons, lessons can become laughter, and laughter can bring people together. It’s a reminder to embrace imperfection, to learn from the past, and to keep a sense of humor along the way.

This event honors our history — even the absurd parts — while shining a light on what makes Florence so special: our connection to nature, our quirky charm, and our community pride. The festivities support local arts and culture, boost small businesses, and turn morbid curiosity into something joyful, sustainable, and distinctly “us.”

The Exploding Whale Awards were created in that same spirit: to recognize the people, businesses, and moments that make Florence a place unlike any other. Biggest Splash Award
For the person or group who made the biggest waves in our community this year — through creativity, service, or sheer enthusiasm. Just like the unforgettable moment that sent bits of whale skyward, their impact reached far and wide, leaving a lasting impression on everyone around them.
Biggest Boom Award
To the loudest laugh, boldest personality, or most attention-grabbing moment of the year — this award celebrates those who bring joy, energy, and volume wherever they go. Like that famous explosion, they make sure nobody forgets they were here!
Seagull of the Year
Ever-present and always in the mix, this award goes to the person who shows up wherever something fun (or delicious) is happening. Like Florence’s most famous feathered residents, they have a knack for finding the best spots and making themselves part of every celebration. Whether they’re helping, laughing, or snacking, they bring enthusiasm wherever they land.
The Cleanup Crew Award
Because every great explosion needs someone ready with a shovel (or a sense of humor). This award goes to the behind-the-scenes hero who swoops in to fix, tidy, or smooth things over when the unexpected happens. They might not seek the spotlight, but they’re the reason everything — and everyone — stays in one piece.
Flying Chunk Award
Unpredictable, unstoppable, and always landing in the most unexpected places — this award goes to someone whose energy or creativity takes flight and surprises us all. Whether it’s a brilliant idea, a spontaneous act of kindness, or an unexpected success, they remind us that sometimes the best things come from a little chaos.
Spirit of Flo/rence Award
This award honors someone who truly embodies what it means to live and love Flo/Rence. They’re the friendly face you see at every community event, the one cheering on local efforts and helping others shine. Their pride in our town runs deep, and their energy helps keep our small community vibrant, creative, and connected.
Harbor Light Award
Given to the person who shines the brightest in our community — guiding others, offering encouragement, and lighting the way through both calm and stormy seas. Like the beacons along our coast, they remind us that compassion, creativity, and kindness can illuminate even the foggiest day.
